Abnormal spindle orientation during microsporogenesis in an interspecific Brachiaria (Gramineae) hybrid Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mendes-Bonato,Andréa Beatriz; Pagliarini,Maria Suely; Valle,Cacilda Borges do.
This paper reports a case of abnormal spindle orientation during microsporogenesis in an interspecific hybrid of the tropical grass Brachiaria. In the affected plant, prophase I was normal. In metaphase I, bivalents were regularly co-oriented but distantly positioned and spread over the equatorial plate. In anaphase I, chromosomes failed to converge into focused poles due to parallel spindle fibers. As a consequence, in telophase I, an elongated nucleus or several micronuclei were observed in each pole. In the second division, the behavior was the same, leading to polyads with several micronuclei. A total of 40% of meiotic products were affected. The use of this hybrid in production systems needing good-quality seeds is discussed.

Adaptation of the C4 grass Panicum maximum to defoliation is related to plasticity of N uptake, mobilisation and allocation patterns Scientia Agricola
Santos,Patricia Menezes; Thornton,Barry; Corsi,Moacyr.
Dry mass production and persistence of Panicum maximum pastures depends on nitrogen supply. Defoliation influences N uptake and allocation patterns yet its effects on plasticity of N dynamics in P. maximum have not been investigated. Stable isotopes of N (15N) were used in order to test the hypothesis that defoliation in terms of proportion of the leaf area removed effects N mobilisation, uptake and allocation patterns in P. maximum. The plants were initially cut weekly to a height of either 0.15 m or 0.30 m for seven weeks. Eight weeks after the first defoliation, all plants were defoliated for a final time to remove 0, 25, 50, 75 or 100 % of the area of each individual leaf blade of the main tiller. Root N uptake was reduced when all leaf area was...

Santos,Márcia Vendrúsculo dos; Kozloski,Gilberto Vilmar; Quadros,Fernando Luiz Ferreira de; Pires,Cleber Cassol; Wommer,Tatiana Pfüller; Mônego,Camila Ornelas.
The objective of the present experiment was to evaluate the effect of forage allowance (3, 6 or 9 kg of green leaves dry matter (DM)/100 kg of body weight (BW)) on both animal performance and attributes of Cynodon dactylon var.dactylon canopy managed under continuous stocking by wethers. The study was carried out with 27 Polwarth wethers throughout five 28-day periods, in a completely randomized experiment, which included three paddocks per treatment and three tester animals per paddock. Forage mass varied from 2878 to 6580 kg of DM/ha and was directly related to forage allowance. Leaves proportion (mean of 23%) and leaves growth rate (mean of 25 kg of DM/ha/day) varied between experimental periods in a similar rate for all treatments. Stocking rate varied...

Animal production in Tanzania grass swards fertilized with nitrogen R. Bras. Zootec.
Canto,Marcos Weber do; Bona Filho,Amadeu; Moraes,Aníbal de; Hoeschl,André Ricardo; Gasparino,Eliane.
Nitrogen (N) at 100, 200, 300, and 400 kg ha-1 was applied to Tanzania grass swards to evaluate the animal response and relationships between sward characteristics and the performance of young Nellore bulls (Bos indicus) under continuous stocking. A completely randomized experimental design was used with two replications between 11 November 2001 and 15 April 2002 when the sward heights were maintained at 60 cm by using different stocking rates. The average daily gain (ADG) (0.73 kg d-1) was not affected by N doses while the number of animal days ha-1 increased linearly from 515 to 1267. On the other hand, the linear increase in the animal yield was 399, 653, 755, and 895 kg ha-1 for N at 100, 200, 300, and 400 kg ha-1, respectively, while the ratio between...

Fermentative and microbiological profile of marandu-grass ensiled with citrus pulp pellets Scientia Agricola
Bernardes,Thiago Fernandes; Reis,Ricardo Andrade; Moreira,Andréia Luciane.
High-wet roughages with low content of soluble carbohydrates, such as tropical grasses, should be inappropriate for producing silages of adequate quality. This study aimed to evaluate the fermentative and microbiological profiles of Marandu-grass ensilaged with pelleted citric pulp (PCP). Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst ex. A. Rich) Stapf cv. Marandu with 58 days of vegetative growth was harvested for producing experimental silages in PVC silos provided with Bünsen valves and density capacity of 900 kg m-3. Treatments were three PCP levels (0, 50 and 100 g kg-1 of fresh forage) and seven times (1, 4, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 56 days) after sealing. PCP inclusion increased soluble carbohydrate concentrations by 15 to 20% and reduced pH (5.3 to 4.2) and N-NH3 levels...

Forage mass production and grazing loss of sorghum hybrid in response to the density of the sowing and the spacing between planting lines R. Bras. Zootec.
Simili,Flávia Fernanda; Lima,Maria Lúcia Pereira; Moreira,Andréia Luciane; Soares,Paulo Victória; Roma Júnior,Luiz Carlos; Reis,Ricardo Andrade.
The objective of this experiment was to evaluate dry matter yield and loss of grazing due to animal trampling in response to sowing density and spacing between lines in the planting. Sorghum hybrid 1P400 was submitted to six treatments, composed of three sowing density combinations (12; 16 and 20 kg/ha of seeds) and two spacing between lines (0.40 and 0.80 m). Sorghum hybrid 1P400 was sowed in two seasons, at the end of spring (December 3rd, 2005) and the other at the end of summer (March 20th, 2006). Cultivation strategies influenced plant population in the two experimental seasons. Diameter of the stem in season 1 decreased with density increase, whereas in the second season, interaction between sowing density and spacing was significant. In the first...

In situ degradability of corn stover and elephant-grass harvested at four stages of maturity Scientia Agricola
Silva,Luis Felipe Prada e; Cassoli,Laerte Dagher; Roma Júnior,Luiz Carlos; Rodrigues,Ana Carolina de Oliveira; Machado,Paulo Fernando.
Among tropical forages, corn silage is largely used by farmers trying to explore the maximum genetic potential from the animals. However, other tropical forages, such as elephant-grass (Pennisetum purpureum), are more productive and therefore cheaper to use than corn silage. Our objective was to compare the in situ degradability of elephant-grass with that from corn hybrids, all harvested at four stages of maturity. The experimental design followed a randomized block design with nested subplots. Two corn hybrids: AG5011, ZN8392 were harvested with 25, 30, 35, and 40% dry matter (DM) in the whole plant, and separated in stem + leaf sheath + leaf blade (stover), and cobs. Elephant-grass was harvested with 30, 40, 50 and 60 days after a leveling cut. Dried...

Replacement of aruana grass by gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium) on silage quality R. Bras. Zootec.
Massafera,Danilo Antonio; Florentino,Ligiane Aparecida; Rabelo,Carlos Henrique Silveira; Härter,Carla Joice; Rezende,Adauton Vilela de; Reis,Ricardo Andrade.
Our objective was to investigate the effect of the replacement of aruana grass by gliricidia on the fermentative losses, chemical composition, and aerobic stability of silages. For ensiling, whole-crop aruana grass (75 d of growth) was chopped (275 g kg-1 dry matter - DM) and ensiled alone or associated with gliricidia (270 g kg-1 DM; 150 d of growth). For gliricidia, we used only the leaves and stalks to ensile. The evaluated treatments were different ratios of aruana grass to gliricidia (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100), with four replicates (mini-silos). The silage composed only of gliricidia exhibited a lower pH than the other silages. Dry matter recovery was not affected by the treatments, although effluent losses were affected. The replacement...

Galindo, Fernando Shintate; Beloni, Tatiane; Buzetti, Salatier; Teixeira Filho, Marcelo Carvalho Minhoto; Dupas, Elisângela; Ludkiewicz, Mariana Gaioto Ziolkowski.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the viability of pasture with high production capacity and the potential for production of silage using different sources and doses of nitrogen (N) by quantifying the productivity of dry matter (DM), some qualitative characteristics, the total cost of production (TC) and total operating cost (TOC) of silage production. The experimental design was randomized block in a factorial scheme with four replications including two sources of nitrogen (urea and ammonium nitrate) and five N doses (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg ha-1 by cutting). The increase in N provided greater DM and crude protein content and reduced the fiber content in neutral detergent. The source of N did not affect the chemical composition, and...
